Learnings about ranking capabilities and buying an expired domain

I published my first article last month as part of a series on building MVPs.

Part 1: Buying an expiring domain

Today I want to share some of my insights on ranking capabilities.

Recall that buying expired domains was not our primary objective. We were looking for a unique opportunity to get a domain name called Paper Collective. This is also a way to learn more about expired domain topics. In my first article I discussed the things you should do before purchasing an expired domain. Here’s the first lesson:

#1 Search for the brand name in Google

Before I bought the domain name, I checked out everything else. Three websites had the same domain name, but they used different ccTLDs or a dash to distinguish Poster from Collective. Another website was ranking for Poster Collective: Some of them also bid on [Poster Collective].

It was clear to me at this point that it would be more difficult to rank under our domain name.

#2 40-days to rank on our brand

It took us 40 days to rank under our brand name. The website was launched on September 27th.

We covered the key concepts of accessibility on our website to make it easy for Google to find our pages. Next SEO is used to manage these concepts.

  • Title, description, canonical and open graphs.
  • Sitemap.xml & robots.txt.

We get impressions from the category and artist pages within the first few days of the site’s launch. It was a good indicator that our brand wasn’t crawling or discoverability.

#3 Get new backlinks

  • I was willing to share my learnings and published my first article in October 15. I added the link to the website on October 27th. Ahrefs found the link on October 29th.
  • We also published our corporate website, and added a link to our MVP (tldr: Poster Collective), on October 22nd. Ahrefs found the link on October 23rd.
  • On November 4, we also added a link to our ecommerce website. Ahrefs discovered this link on November 5.

These backlinks can help us rank higher for our brand. Backlinks to old pages were already in place before the domain name expired. That is why it is crucial to buy expired domains with traffic. Even if we could retrieve some of the older content or redirect the URLs to them, it wouldn’t help.

#4 Don’t do it wrong to make it valuable

It’s unlikely that I would have recommended it to anyone if I hadn’t googled the site’s name to find out what the results were.

  • Uncertainty of being able rank on the brand’s name.
  • There is a big difference between the products on the sites mentioned above and ours.

But I was wrong!
